Intrigued by the idea of getting your own home embroidery machine, but don’t know where to start? Well, it can be a bit daunting. There are now many different models of home embroidery machines available, with many different features and in a wide range of prices. Before you jump in and just get the first model you come across, there are some things that you need to consider:
1. Your level of experience. There are some very simple, user-friendly home embroidery machines that you can use right out of the box, no matter what your previous level of experience. However, you may be limited by the size of the embroidery area and the number of designs available on the more basic models, although picking a model where you have the ability to download additional patterns will help alleviate that. There are also home embroidery machines that can handle large and complex designs, but for all the bells and whistles they can get expensive very quickly and sometimes require an expert hand to guide them. So consider your own level of experience and comfort level with sewing before you decide on a home embroidery machine.
2. The projects you plan to do. 
Most home embroidery machines can handle just about anything, but there are always exceptions. If you want large embroidery or monograms on your projects, you may need to spend more for a model with a larger embroidery area. Also, if you’re using the home embroidery machine for mostly quilting, you will want to ensure that you get a model that works well with thicker fabrics.
3. The equipment you already own. If you’ve already got a great sewing machine, then you can get yourself a stand-alone home embroidery machine that only does embroidery, no sewing. But if your sewing machine is a few years old, or even a second-hand or hand-me-down, then you may want to consider one of the combo models that does both sewing and embroidery. You might pay a little more, but it will be less than buying a sewing machine and home embroidery machine separately.
4. Your budget. Ah, the budget. The one thing that is always, ultimately, the deciding factor on what home embroidery machine you will end up getting. There are many models that can cost thousands of dollars, but luckily, as technology improves, the cost of getting a great, versatile, home embroidery machine has come down quite a bit. And since a lot of the models these days include a computer component, there is the ability to either download or upgrade the software so that your home embroidery machine grows with you, making it an even better investment and letting you get the most out of your money.
